My Why: The Power of Volunteerism
By Dawn Castro
As Director of Volunteers at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, I believe my job is to create opportunities for people to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people and in their communities. It is about connecting people who want to serve with young people who need someone to believe in them. It is about helping volunteers discover that their contribution, no matter how big or small, has a lasting impact.
As a leader of volunteers, I see my role as helping people find their “why,” connecting their passion to a purpose, and showing them the difference, they can make in the lives of the youth and teens we serve. My goal is for every volunteer to feel valued, supported, and inspired to continue serving.
To me, volunteering is more than simply giving your time. It is giving of yourself — your talents, your compassion, your experience, and your belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed.
Most importantly, volunteerism is hope in action.
Every hour a volunteer gives, every mentor who shows up, and every person who chooses to serve sends a powerful message to our youth: You matter. Your future matters. I believe in you. Your community stands behind you.
Why Should YOU Volunteer?
Your time, presence, and gifts have the power to change someone’s life — especially your own.
Serving as a volunteer gives you the opportunity to step outside of yourself and invest in something bigger. It allows you to use your skills, experiences, and passions to meet real needs and create meaningful connections within your community.
But volunteering isn’t only about what we give. It is also about what we gain.
Through service, we gain purpose, perspective, relationships, confidence, and opportunities to grow. We discover that even a few hours can make a difference, and that simply showing up for someone can mean more than we realize.
When you volunteer with young people, that impact is especially powerful. A volunteer can become a listening ear, an encouraging voice, a mentor, a teacher, or simply the consistent presence a young person needs as they overcome obstacles and work toward their goals.
One caring adult can change the way a young person sees themselves and their future.
That’s why I remind people that, at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, volunteering can mean something as simple — and as powerful — as being an adult who believes in a young person.
You may think of it as giving just an hour of your time, but to a young person, you are offering confidence, connection, hope, and a glimpse of what their future can hold.
The Impact I Want to Leave
I want to be remembered as someone who helped people recognize the power they have to make a difference. Through my work with volunteers, I want to build a culture of service where people feel connected to a purpose greater than themselves and understand that their time, talents, and presence can change a young person’s life.
I want the young people we serve to know that there are adults in their community who believe in them, show up for them, and are invested in their future.
And I want the volunteers I work with to be changed by the experience of serving — with a deeper sense of purpose, stronger connections to their community, and a desire to continue giving back.
I don’t want my impact to be measured by what I accomplished alone. I want it measured by the people I inspired, the lives we touched together, and the difference that continues because others discovered they could make one.
My Legacy
I don’t want to simply leave behind a record of what I did. I want to leave behind people who continue to serve because they discovered their own power to make a difference.
If I can help one person find purpose through service, inspire one volunteer to keep showing up, or help create an environment where one young person believes more deeply in their own potential, then my work has meaning.
That is my why.
That is the impact I want to leave.
And that is why I believe in the power of volunteerism.
Your time matters. You don’t have to give everything to make a difference.
Your story matters. Your experiences and lessons can help someone else.
Your presence matters. Sometimes, showing up is the most important thing you can do.
Your skills matter. What comes naturally to you may be something someone else deeply needs.
You matter. Volunteering connects you to a greater purpose than yourself.
Ready to Find Your Why?
Your time, talents, and presence can make a meaningful difference in the life of a young person. Whether you have an hour to give or are looking for a deeper way to get involved, there is a place for you to make an impact.
