Volunteering FAQ

What are your opportunities?
All of our opportunities are available through our volunteer website. Please click here to view all of the volunteer opportunities.

How long do background check results take to come back?
Once you’ve been fingerprinted, the background check clearance process typically takes about 2 weeks to complete. It can be longer at times, so please be mindful of that.

Do I still have to do a background check if I have done one for work?
Yes. However, if your background check was processed through the Department of Children & Families, we will resubmit your prints for our organization to bring your prints under our umbrella as well.

How long does my background check last?
One calendar year from the date of your clearance. Your 24-hour annual commitment resets when you commit to volunteering another year.

Is there a minimum amount of hours required to qualify for doing community service?
Yes. The minimum is 4 hours. It should be noted that any hours above one Club day requires a background check.

What are the minimum age requirements for community service hours?
If you’re a minor, the minimum age required is 12 years old. More community service-related details below.

Do you accept hours for higher education course credit requirements?
Yes. However, a Level 2 background check is required for this opportunity.

Do you accept court-ordered community service hours?
Yes. For adults, you can only serve your hours at our Thrift Store. Volunteer applicants with criminal records including illegal drug offenses, violence, violence against children, sex offenses and weapons charges will not be accepted. Only minor, non-violent offenses, traffic, and DUI charges will be accepted. For minors, the Service Director at your chosen Club will decide on a case-by-case basis. Please find your local Club here.

If I’m cleared to volunteer, may I volunteer at multiple Clubs?
Yes. However, you will need to schedule a Club Tour with each Club’s Service Director to talk about your role at that particular Club before volunteering.

I’m in middle school, how do I volunteer/serve Community Service?
If you want to volunteer at one of our traditional Clubs (read: NOT a Middle School ASZ Club), go to the Service Director of your chosen Club with your parent, fill out a Club membership packet, and discuss volunteer opportunities with them. There are NOT volunteer opportunities for middle school Members at our Middle School ASZ Clubs.
